I had grits for the first time - they were very salty, though they tasted okay I suppose. I fail to see why people get so excited over them, though I gather that there are many ways to prepare them. They were not gritty, so the name is deceiving. I think I'd rather have oatmeal.

Anyway, we left LUMCON at around 11, and drove to Houma (pronounced hoe-ma), home of "houmacide records," and lots of signs declaring "BARRY! for parish president." After failing to find an Authentic Cajun Place, we had some decent "Chinese" food, which included exceedingly good sushi covered in thousand island dressing. I had vegetable Lo Mein, which was actually pretty good, even if it was overly salty (I sense a trend.) The Cajun place we had been looking for was spotted on the way out of town, but it was closed anyway. I entertained the students I was driving around with various BARRY! jokes, and my "infectious giggle."

A couple of hours later, we were in New Orleans. We dropped the students off in the French quarter, and hunted for parking for almost half an hour. Fortunately it was free, being Sunday, but many places were closed. I had a delightful cafe au lait made with chicory, and some beignets. Denise and I then collected some soil samples from various places in the French quarter (this was harder than one would think!), and eventually collected the students.

"Laissez les bons temps rouler" indeed.

The drive to Bay St Louis was fairly uneventful, though I had to choose between Wal Mart and Taco Bell for dinner, and I'm afraid the former won out. As much as I hate them, at least I could find something edible.

The students now begin their three weeks of service. I'm leaving tomorrow to spend four days with my collaborators at Alcorn State University. Hopefully they'll have the polymers I need made, and can show me how to generate more. At least I'd like to get 3 oz of one type to take with me (on the plane, of course). I can see it now: "Why yes officer, this bottle contains molecularly imprinted polymers whose conductivity changes in the presence or absence of contaminants in food or water!"
