I had the first day of my rings class at a local metalsmithing studio. It was a six hour class, and we spent the day learning how to make fairly simple flat rings in sterling silver. Holy crap, silver is so much easier to work with than steel. It was divine! Many of the techniques we used I had already been introduced to through my die-carving work, though soldering with a torch was new. I should have pictures of the ring I made today tomorrow...
And, I was officially declared the "hero of the day." One of the other students was polishing the inside of her nearly-done ring when it got stuck on the tapered end of the polisher (basically a buffing wheel setup with a cone on one side for polishing inside of things.) She shut of the machine, but got impatient while waiting for it to stop and tried to remove her ring while it was still spinning. Unsurprisingly, it went flying and fell down a crack between a workbench and the wall. She spent about 20 minutes poking around in the crack with a piece of wire before giving up. However, since it was so late in the day the instructor would not let her start a new piece. I noticed that they didn't check all of the areas under the bench, so while she was complaining to one of the other students I grabbed the flashlight and peered under the bench. Lo and behold, the unfinished ring was under the bench stuck in a corner. I fished it out with a bit of wire, and there was much rejoicing.
