I spent many sleepless nights playing the original version of this game Back In The Day. Recently I got MOO3 on sale for $10, and it has consumned me over the past few days. It's several orders of magnitude more complex than the original, and I'm not sure I like some of the AI auto-management stuff, but micro-managing planets is such a pain...

Anyway in the first game if you found Orion and defeated the guardian there you were given tons of cool new technologies, a sweet planet, and various other Neat-o Things. In MOO3 there appear to be several different guardians, perhaps one for each race? I'm not really sure, I just finished a game where I killed a guardian and one of the planets in that system had the "Blah Guardian" (where blah is the name of one of the other races). I also found another guardian, but wasn't able to defeat it before I lost the game due to some silly empire becoming president in the galactic senate.

The manual isn't all that helpful. There's a bunch of backstory I'm missing from not having played MOO2 as well.

I played it. I think it's kind of garbage, actually. They appear to have confused "complexity" for "depth". That's my $0.02.

Yeah, it's annoying in many ways. I'm quite stubborn though and definitely feel the need to annihilate some opposing empires.
