Excitement

I've had to defend my vegetarian diet on a few occasions recently. This generally annoys me, but not too deeply. I do, however, fail to understand why other people care so much about what I choose not to eat. Here are a few of the more notable encounters:

Whilst in Canada last weekend, some of my brother's and [livejournal.com profile] jastabell's friends decided to mock me over dinner for not eating roe. I'm still rather perplexed by this particular instance, since they really got a kick out of it for some reason.

This weekend, at the Field of Cloth of Gold, James the Cook said the following while we were preparing the feast: "You're a vegetarian, eh? I don't care whether you live or die then." It seemed clear from his tone that he was not joking, but I can't claim to read him particularly well.

Tonight, however, was a nice contrast to this recent silliness. [livejournal.com profile] ursule and I went to a newly opened Japanese place down the hill from us for dinner (it was quite pleasant). Upon receiving the sushi we had ordered, I noticed that one of my rolls had roe inside of it. I asked to see the menu, and pointed out that roe was not listed as an ingredient and that it was supposedly "100% vegetarian." They apologized, made another roll for me (which was extremely good), and all was well.

how odd that James would say that!

I guess I'd interpret it as a badly expressed version of "you're a vegatarian? I'm not and would prefer you not expect me to prepare special dishes for you. thanks."

I hope so, anyway....

me, I like cooking for vegetarians, and my favorite medieval meals are "fishday" meals :) (I know fish inst a vegetable, nor is chicken. nor is "no meat, cut vewwy small" which is what one chinese restaruant said when we asked if the vegetable fried rice was vvegetarian
