I've had to defend my vegetarian diet on a few occasions recently. This generally annoys me, but not too deeply. I do, however, fail to understand why other people care so much about what I choose not to eat. Here are a few of the more notable encounters:

Whilst in Canada last weekend, some of my brother's and [livejournal.com profile] jastabell's friends decided to mock me over dinner for not eating roe. I'm still rather perplexed by this particular instance, since they really got a kick out of it for some reason.

This weekend, at the Field of Cloth of Gold, James the Cook said the following while we were preparing the feast: "You're a vegetarian, eh? I don't care whether you live or die then." It seemed clear from his tone that he was not joking, but I can't claim to read him particularly well.

Tonight, however, was a nice contrast to this recent silliness. [livejournal.com profile] ursule and I went to a newly opened Japanese place down the hill from us for dinner (it was quite pleasant). Upon receiving the sushi we had ordered, I noticed that one of my rolls had roe inside of it. I asked to see the menu, and pointed out that roe was not listed as an ingredient and that it was supposedly "100% vegetarian." They apologized, made another roll for me (which was extremely good), and all was well.

people do care about weird things. i mean, you are dating a girl who sent me monies for food once when i decided i didn't want to eat for a while... which is in a sense caring what i choose not to eat... *grin*

but yeah, i think vegetarian is silly, however, i do care if you die :) and in the end, more dead flesh for me.

I still find it amusing how many folks think fish is a vegitable. :)

That is one thing I don't miss about being vegetarian. The worst comments were always from my parents who really didn't get it and even when they tried to be supportive where critical, picky, and snarky.

You know, the people who supported me most when I was Veg. are also the people currently living in my house, Darrin, who was always supportive, even when he had to eat TVP sloppy joes and Gretchen who's dare to not eat red meat for a month lead to my realization that I didn't NEED to eat meat.

how odd that James would say that!

I guess I'd interpret it as a badly expressed version of "you're a vegatarian? I'm not and would prefer you not expect me to prepare special dishes for you. thanks."

I hope so, anyway....

me, I like cooking for vegetarians, and my favorite medieval meals are "fishday" meals :) (I know fish inst a vegetable, nor is chicken. nor is "no meat, cut vewwy small" which is what one chinese restaruant said when we asked if the vegetable fried rice was vvegetarian

You know, I also sometimes am given a hard time about what I do and do not eat. Especially when people find out about things I won't eat (ie peppers, beans) and things I do eat (lots of sushi). And to be perfectly honest, the few times I have run into people who don't eat garlic I have given them a pretty hard time (jokingly of course). Not sure what it is about food, but it does seem to encourage strong reactions. I find not eating garlic much odder than not eating meat, and the reasons behind the choices don't seem to make any difference in my reactions.

I will always love you for getting Conrad to shout "D! They've got your tofu!"

:)

I think people get antsy about vegetarians because they either feel guilty about the amount of meat they eat, or they're afraid you're going to MAKE them feel guilty about it... an offensive defense, I guess.

Me, I'm a meatatarian, but I wish there were more vegitarians in the world. Our environment suffers from meat production. We've been trying to have one vegitarian meal a week, at least... it's hard when you have an intestinal disorder that limits you to 1g of fiber a day! :P

What I find strange is that he made fun of you for not eating roe. I mean, there are some serious meaty pleasures that vegetarians forgo, but roe is not among these, being that it is basically unnaturally-crunchy pockets of eau de fish. Yeuchh.

(and hi, I'm the random female CWRU grad you met in Madison through [livejournal.com profile] minkoflove last weekend. ph33r my mad stalker skillz. :) )
