I spent a few hours working on the Peugeot today. I reassembled the clutch and the magneto, including lots of fussing over setting the timing right. The points aren't opening at the right point, but I'm 99% sure that the actual timing is set right. Since Peugeot flywheels are not keyed, this is a more difficult process than it really should be... A timing tool would have made that process much easier, but oh well, I don't have one. For the clutch, I ended up using the one from the totally seized engine, since it was significantly less worn than the one on the "good" engine. The sticky clutch arm problem I had on the old clutch appears to be due to one of the studs that the arms sit on being bent. Bad news, but luckily I had a spare clutch just waiting to be used.

After that I reattached the engine mounting hardware to the engine, and then put it back on the frame. Then I realized that putting the intake on the engine was going to be harder than it ought to be, and took the engine off again. I put the intake on the engine and called it a day. I'm going to replace the teeny-tiny stock carb with a Dellorto (probably a 14.12,) but I need to buy it first!

The piston that's currently in the engine isn't in that great of shape. It has some craters in the top and some bad scratches down one side. The rings are in good condition though, and it certainly has enough compression to blow my thumb off of the spark plug hole (note to self - buy a compression gauge.) The spare cylinder and piston I have are in much better shape, but none of my needle nose pliers are small enough to remove the circlips on the existing piston anyway. We'll see how it goes.

The next task: assemble the rest of the transmission! I need to see if the original owner kept the various washers and nuts needed to do this. I know that the rear wheel is missing some hardware, so a trip to Tacoma screw must be done at some point anyway. I also need to read up on adjusting the points correctly.

You're always welcome to come over and hang out. :)

I've got a big deadline tomorrow that's eating my life, but may end up working on the bike later in the week. I'll let you know.

No holes in the piston and good rings. Don't sweat the small stuff.
