Chicago O'hare, 11:23 am CST., 12/21/02
Wish I had a net connection out here... I'd love for there to be wireless access points spread about the airport. Well, perhaps there are; admittedly I've run a very small sample consisting of a few gates and one restaurant. I do have a few hours, perhaps I could do some war-walking...
I seem to recall finding access at one point last time I was here, but I couldn't authenticate.
Anyway, the trip is going reasonably well so far.
Hung out with Molly and Tim last night for a bit, we watched "A Christmas Story", which was funnier than I remembered it. Delivered my contribution to the exchange this evening, but I forgot to call Linda to tell her I wasn't going to be there (DOH!).
On Monday, I Zeke, Steve, and myself went out to a thai place, and watched some anime. We ended up watching the first four episodes of Trigun, which I found to be excessively silly for my dour tastes. Fortunately the series becomes much more depressing later on (reportedly), so all is not lost. Regardless of the content, the animation and music are both quite good, and the setting is interesting (though I do have a thing for post-apocalyptic stories...) I'm looking forward to seeing more of it.
For all of those not in the know, I'm getting laser eye surgery this Thursday. I have a preliminary appointment on Monday where I will receive a full-out eye exam, and then a post-op on Friday. Three weeks later, I have a follow-up with an un-specified doctor in Cleveland.
Oh, and I hate the holiday season. Blech.
12:46 PM CST, 12/21/02 - same
Two hours left until my flight, and I am watching rows of trendy people mixed in with sailors and punks all on their way to Dusseldorf Germany.
Some idiot left his ticket inside his coat, which was eventually found underneath a pile of baggage and other detrius. The idiot in question had a highly irritating voice, and was bellowing quite unhappily.
Hrmm, just had a veggieburger and a beer at the "chili's and bites" here in the concourse. They had Sam Adams, which is drinkable, although I like their specialty brews better than the standard fare...
This reminds me of Pennsic, when Steve, Aldred, and myself were getting prepared for an evening of party-hopping. We had just spent an inordinate amount of cash on a case of Sam Adam's Cherry Wheat beer at a local PA state liquor agency. They wanted something like $48 for a case of guinness, so we purchased something more affordable. Anyway, Aldred has a tendancy to drink swill like Busch and Miller lite, so we were working on his taste. He hadn't had this particular beer before, and was at a loss to describe it's flavour... After some time, he said in the voice of one who has discovered something exciting and new: "It has sort of a wheaty... cherry flavour to it."
He wasn't particlarily amused when I commented that you might expect that from a "Cherry wheat" beer.
Anyway, the veggieburger was fairly good. I quickly grew tired of hearing new renditions of old holiday songs, so I consumed my meal and left as quickly as possible. I am sort of regretting that now, as it was a much more interesting place than this gate area.
There is a flight going to Columbus boarding at my gate now, soon I shall be able to lay claim to a seat in the general area of it, and await my flight. Approximately an hour and a half until they start boarding, and I'm running low on pages in The Cryptonomicon. Fortunately I expected this, and brought another book.
Alas, I forgot to bring headphones, else I would listen to music via this laptop. I have found in the past that Airports are horrible places to purchase electronic equipment, especially headphones. My ear canal must be a non-standard shape, because earbuds very rarely fit me, I have to constantly adjust them. This coupled with the fact that I have a large head, makes it difficult to buy headpones that will fit.
Now an irritatingly large family is laughing in a highly irritating fashion while fooling around with their tickets in matching jackets of various colours. They have given up and handed the stack to the attendant manning the machine, who quickly handed them out by calling out names. Each time she called a name, the family scurried about muttering to one another before producing the individual who matched that name. The mother of the family thought this entire episode was very cute, and often threw her hands in the air in mock defeat, giggling the entire time.
People fucking baffle me.
4:54 CST, 12/21/02 - on the plane to Portland
Well I didn't find any wireless networks at all in my limited walk about the Chicago O'Hare airport. Ahh well.
United didn't screw up my meal this time, I actually got a vegetarian box thingy. It contained: a hard, pita-like circle of bread, some vegan "chocolate" chip cookies, two scoops of a strange yellow substance with peas in it (a poor attempt at hummus I think), and two tomato slices. Not terrible, but I've had better airline food that's for sure.
The plane is showing some inane movie about kid spies or something... thankfully no one seems to be paying attention to it and/or laughing, so it can safely be ignored.
Finished Cryptonomicon, started my second book (Ursula K LeGuin's "The Telling"), though I didn't get all that far before I decided to take a nap. A few minutes into said nap, my meal arrived, and I have since consumed caffeine and am quite awake. Whee.
I've been feeling the urge to do some coding lately... something I have done in earnest since I was a full-time student. I've written a great number of scripts, and modified some code, but that doesn't really count.
