I've had to defend my vegetarian diet on a few occasions recently. This generally annoys me, but not too deeply. I do, however, fail to understand why other people care so much about what I choose not to eat. Here are a few of the more notable encounters:
Whilst in Canada last weekend, some of my brother's and
jastabell's friends decided to mock me over dinner for not eating roe. I'm still rather perplexed by this particular instance, since they really got a kick out of it for some reason.
This weekend, at the Field of Cloth of Gold, James the Cook said the following while we were preparing the feast: "You're a vegetarian, eh? I don't care whether you live or die then." It seemed clear from his tone that he was not joking, but I can't claim to read him particularly well.
Tonight, however, was a nice contrast to this recent silliness.
ursule and I went to a newly opened Japanese place down the hill from us for dinner (it was quite pleasant). Upon receiving the sushi we had ordered, I noticed that one of my rolls had roe inside of it. I asked to see the menu, and pointed out that roe was not listed as an ingredient and that it was supposedly "100% vegetarian." They apologized, made another roll for me (which was extremely good), and all was well.
